Personal Hygiene Project
For most women and girls, it would be unimaginable to have to cope with no sanitary protection. However, for lots of women and girls in Kenya, this is exactly the situation they face every month, due to poverty. Girls in this situation will often have to miss three or four days schooling per month. The effect of this on a girl's dignity cannot be measured.
In 2009 an appeal for funds was made to provide the girls and widows at Otacho Hope Orphanage with sanitary towels and also underwear. It also became apparent that few of the children in the orphanage had any underwear, so we extended the project to provide each child with at least three pairs of underwear per year.
It costs as little as £20.00 per year to supply one girl or widow with sanitary towels. This is what one of the girls had to say, she is fourteen years old:
...from the bottom of my heart I would like to take this opportunity to thank you abundantly for the sanitary towels which you give us girls, we feel good with the ALWAYS, in school we are safe. This is a great help, it shows a lot of love for us and care.
and a note from one of the widows:
Thank you a lot for helping the girls and we the widows. We are very happy because we get things we did not get in the past. Every month we are safe and we can do our daily work, so we are so thankful to you.
In 2011 the project was again extended to provide soap. This, along with a couple of wash stands, mean that the children have the facility to be able to wash their hands after the toilet and before meals, thus reducing the instances of diarrhea and sickness.
These are very simple measures which are so often taken for granted, but just for one moment try to imagine what it would be like if these simple things were beyond your reach.
